The first York Region Optimist Chess Tournament took place in 1996. It was founded by Steve Granger, and supported by the Optimist Club of Aurora including Chris Tsang and Don Stubbs. Key original volunteers were: David Lawless, Doug Gillis, and Leslie Armstrong. The three other original area tournaments were headed by the following Optimist members: Gord McLean and Paul Comiere in Richmond Hill; John Webster in Markham; and Al Mardon and Al Gradeen in Newmarket. Last year over 1,300 students participated in the 6 area tournaments. It is safe to say that our Optimist slogan, "Friend of Youth", is reflected through the continued success our tournaments in York Region. In 2010 we will enter into our 14-th consecutive year of supporting student chess tournaments !
